Explore housing and support careers in West Yorkshire

Find official West Yorkshire careers support, research local housing services and make a practical plan for training and applications.

Start with the work you want to do, then narrow your search to places and working patterns you can manage. This guide connects independent career preparation with official regional services. It is a research route, not a list of available jobs.

West Yorkshire includes Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield. The Combined Authority's employment-support service covers residents across those five areas. A vacancy's office address alone will not tell you the area you would travel around or the hours you would work.

Choose a role family before a search term

Searching only for “housing jobs” can mix very different work. Write down one or two role families from the housing and support role comparison: tenancy services, housing-related support, property projects or service leadership. Then look for the language used in real employer descriptions.

For each promising description, record the employer, actual duties, essential criteria, workplace, travel area and closing date. Keep the link to the employer's own page. A listing on another site can be a useful lead, but check the source before preparing an application.

West Yorkshire employment support Local help with applications, CVs and skills Can an adviser help me identify evidence for this person specification?
Kirklees employment support Council support for residents seeking work, developing skills or progressing What support is available for my circumstances and current work commitments?

Check the entry conditions of any course or programme separately. A regional funding page does not mean every course is free for every applicant. Use the training decision checklist before committing money or study time.

Understand Kirklees housing context

The council's housing and homelessness service index is a useful starting point for understanding local services and where different responsibilities sit.

Its 2024–2029 homelessness strategy focuses on coordinated services, earlier help, suitable accommodation and reducing repeated rough sleeping. The 2026/27–2028/29 council priorities also discuss earlier access to help, temporary accommodation and tenancy sustainment. These documents describe public priorities; they do not establish that an organisation is recruiting.

Our practical use of that context is to ask better questions. Which part of a service does a role contribute to? Who does it work with? How does the organisation describe a good outcome for residents? The Kirklees service-leadership guide provides a more detailed research exercise for senior applicants.

Build a small employer research record

Use one row for each organisation you investigate. Avoid collecting a long list without reading what the organisations actually do.

Record What to write down
Official website and careers link Check that the careers page is linked from the organisation's own website.
Service and role fit Name the service and explain why its work interests you.
Workplace and travel Separate office base, service locations, home visits and any travel between sites.
Evidence you can offer Match two or three criteria to real experience.
Questions still open Note unclear duties, training, working patterns or application instructions.
Next action and check date Decide whether to enquire, prepare an application or continue researching.

For travelling roles, ask about the territory, transport requirements and how travel fits into the working day. For shift work, ask about the actual rota and any overnight responsibilities. Do not assume “flexible” means that the whole job can be done from home.

Turn the research into an application plan

  1. Choose a role family and a realistic travel area.
  2. Read several current employer descriptions to separate repeated requirements from one employer's preferences.
  3. Record one true example against each requirement you can evidence, using the skills worksheet.
  4. Ask the employer about a material uncertainty before relying on an assumption.
  5. Follow its application instructions and keep a private copy of what you submit.

If the search feels too broad, take your notes to an official careers adviser. A focused question such as “Which of these two role types best uses my administration experience?” gives that conversation a useful starting point.
