Getting started Independent guidance

Find your route into housing and support

Choose a housing career direction, understand supported housing and compare learning routes without overstating your existing experience.

You do not have to understand every housing job before taking a useful first step. Start by choosing a role family, reading actual specifications and separating what you already demonstrate from what you still need to learn.

Choose the question closest to yours

Your starting point Useful next guide What to take away
“I want to understand the sector.” Careers in supported housing Distinctions between housing, support and personal care; questions about the actual work.
“My experience is in another field.” Housing jobs without direct sector experience A realistic transferability exercise and a way to identify gaps.
“I am considering a course.” Housing qualifications and training Checks for the exact qualification, provider, entry requirements and employer relevance.

A practical first-week research plan

  1. Read the role comparison and choose one or two families to explore.
  2. Find current employer specifications through official recruitment pages. Keep the date, exact role and employer with your notes.
  3. Highlight essential requirements separately from desirable experience. Use the job-description guide if wording is unclear.
  4. Write down two true examples from work, volunteering, study or other responsibilities. Avoid naming service users or sharing confidential information.
  5. List the gaps you cannot currently evidence and decide whether to research training, seek relevant supervised experience or ask the employer a focused question.

This is a research sequence, not a promise of eligibility or a job offer. If an employer makes a requirement essential, do not replace it with a claim that enthusiasm is enough.

Make the local picture useful

Our West Yorkshire guide connects official careers support with local housing research. Use it to investigate the area and the practical demands of a real post, including travel between sites. Local strategy documents explain priorities; they are not a list of jobs available today.
